Meet Terri BSW, MSW, RSW, Acc.FM (OAFM)

My friends and family often call me T

I have been a clinical therapist for over 35 years. I love working collaboratively with people to help them grow insight about their life experiences, feelings, choices and options for personal growth. As a mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend, I also explore these same kinds of things myself on a regular basis.

I recently retired after 30 years with Family Services Durham and now I am excited to be able to continue to do this work with you in my own comfortable, private space in Whitby, or virtually, where you can work with me from the comfort of your own space.

I was so honoured and fortunate, when I retired, to receive abundant feedback from clients and colleagues about their experience of working with me. They described me as a calm, compassionate professional with extensive knowledge and skill and an ongoing thirst for learning; as a keen listener with a genuine interest in people radiating “warmth, grace and authentic presence” and who creates space for people to feel unconditionally safe, seen and heard.

It is a privilege for me to be invited into your life to help you explore what matters… what hurts… and what heals, from the inside out.

Let’s talk…
real talk…
about real life…

Guiding Insights

Connection with others is central to our emotional well-being and our ability to create healthy and fulfilling connections is shaped by important relationships throughout our life.

When our attachment needs have not been sufficiently met and we have not felt seen enough, safe enough, soothed enough or connected enough, we learn coping patterns that can sustain pain and unhappiness in our lives.

Developing a secure, healthy and trusting connection with a therapist can provide an opportunity to heal the wounded parts of yourself and to mend and recover from fractured relationships that have produced suffering for you.

My Therapeutic Approach:

I work from a lens that incorporates Attachment-Based Theory, Compassionate Inquiry, Client-Centred Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Developmental Theory, Psychobiological Theory, Somatic Experiencing Theory, Strength-Based Theory, Trauma-Focused Theory and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Issues I Treat:

Relationship Issues, Trauma and PTSD, Life Transitions, Grief and Loss, Stress Reduction, Anxiety, Depression, Chronic Illness, Separation and Divorce, Woman Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Parenting Support, Behavioural Issues, Coping Skills, Self Esteem and Self Compassion, Pre-Marital Education/ Exploration.

I Work With:

Individual Adults, Couples, Teens (16+), Families.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy addresses the root cause and core issues of current problems so that lasting change and personal growth may occur.

When should I see a therapist and how can they help me?
If you are committed to making personal changes for greater life satisfaction, then you are ready to seek therapy. You don’t have to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems” in order for therapy to be helpful. Anyone can benefit from therapy. Often people choose to see a therapist for insight or to be proactive about their mental health or to explore direction in their life.
How long will therapy take?
There is no specific time frame when working on personal development and growth. Together we will work to decide what’s right for you.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No referral is necessary. You may contact me directly by phone or email to schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation to help you decide if you would like to start therapy and to see if you feel that I might be a good fit for you.
What can I expect at my first session?

Once your first session is booked, I will send you both an Intake Form and a Confidentiality/Consent for Therapy Form through my secure online Jane App. You can fill these out and submit them on your own time, in the privacy of your own space before your first session. We will review these briefly at your first appointment to ensure that you understand my policies that protect your confidentiality; to obtain your consent to receive counselling; to inform you of information about your rights with respect to the collection of personal information, fees, safety protocols, scheduling further appointments and to answer any other questions you may have.

We will then begin to explore the issues that have brought you to therapy and develop some goals and a plan for treatment. This may take more than more than one session.

How often do I attend therapy sessions?
It varies, depending on the issues that bring you to therapy, our mutual availability and your preferences. Often people choose to have weekly sessions at first, until we have completed an assessment phase and there has been enough time to develop a relationship together. Once we have been able to establish goals and a plan for treatment, sessions may be spaced farther apart.
How long are your sessions?
Sessions are 50 minutes long unless we agree otherwise.
Is my information confidential?

People come to therapists with sensitive, personal information, and confidentiality is paramount in order to build trust in the therapeutic relationship. The Ontario Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA) requires that all personal health information will not be released without your written consent except when required by law and it will be kept confidential and secure.
